The Cape Town Ulama Board (CTUB) is a body of erudite Sunni Scholars, professionals and religious Leaders. It was founded in 2007 by Mufti Sayed Haroon Al Azhari, Moulana Sayed Imraan Ziyaee and Shaykh Sayed Ridhwaan.
It is a representative body consisting of various imams of mosques, Muftis and teachers of madrasas. Members also include Professionals who are certified Doctors, Lawyers and Educators.
CTUB advocates for a rejection of radical Islam and the extreme spread of wahhabism.
The Board operates from Cape Town and has members scattered locally and internationally, some members are from the Alumni of Al Azhar University.
CTUB currently operates primarily in the Western Cape province , and is one of a number of national Muslim organizations in South Africa.
The organization has been characterized as progressive, the founders maintain that the global Muslim community is experiencing “an intellectual crisis” CTUB’s approach is to address this crisis “through critical examination and contextualization using the Quran and Sunnah.
Large number of Muslims subscribe to decisions regarding fiqh (Islamic law) in the region of operation. CTUB also has significant influence on the running of many mosques and madrassahs in cape Town.
The Cape Town Ulama Board is a Member of the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA).
