Al Jama-ah Honors Robert Sobukwe’s Centenary Birth

Honorable Ganief Hendicks, the Deputy Minister of Social Development and leader of Al Jama-ah, recently hosted a lecture at the Parliament Building to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Robert Sobukwe. The event was held at Parliament on Thursday, December 5, 2024, marking the centenary of Sobukwe’s birth.

Robert Sobukwe, the founding president of the Pan Africanist Congress, is celebrated as a revolutionary figure and a dedicated advocate for African unity. The lecture brought together members of Al Jama-ah, the Cape Town Ulama Board, CTIEC, MJC, MSA UWC, and various other guests to honor Sobukwe’s significant contributions to the anti-apartheid struggle and his leadership in the Pan-African movement.

Distinguished speakers at the event, including Prof. Mohamed Haron, Br. Yasien Mohamed, and Prof. Brian Williams, shared heartfelt reflections on Sobukwe’s life and work. They highlighted his unwavering commitment to the liberation of African people and the importance of preserving and promoting his legacy through educational programs and initiatives that celebrate African heritage.

The speakers emphasized the pride in being African and the necessity of uniting in solidarity to uphold the principles and values that Sobukwe stood for. The attendees was urged to continue the legacy of Robert Sobukwe by working towards a united and prosperous Africa that champions justice, equality, and dignity for all its citizens.

Prof Haron concluded the event with a call to action, encouraging attendees to draw inspiration from Sobukwe’s courage and vision in their own endeavors to build a better future for Africa and its people while using this lecture as an opening to more discussions around his life.
